2018 COLONIES ZONE TEAM CHAMPIONS !!

We did it! Club Tribe won the 2018 Colonies Zone team championship last weekend with over 1,500 points — a huge 3-day effort fueled by all 38 members of the Zone meet team.  Club Tribe finished first among 59 clubs, an extraordinary accomplishment for a team that is just 3.5 years old.

This victory is shared by every Club Tribe swimmer who has helped build the team since December ’14 – by registering, swimming meets, contributing time, money and other resources, organizing and hosting social events, and recruiting other friendly, dynamic people to swim with us.  Rich Williams is the best coach in USMS, Lindsay Lovett is the best Social Chair in USMS, the Lovetts and Shannon Greene have done a phenomenal job keeping us organized at W-L, and all of our super-recruiters just keep finding new people who fit right in.  Thanks to each and every one of you for being a part of it.

Full meet results are linked below, but let me try to summarize the torrent of Club Tribe accomplishments.  I’m certain to miss something and unlikely to do justice to the weekend as a whole using mere statistics, but these are some remarkable numbers –>

Victoria Maqueda (25-29) won the 50 BR and 100 BR, both in VA record time (31.30 / 1:09.27).  Three other women won two events each:  Anna Wujciak (18-24) – 100 FR & 200 BK; Shannon Greene (30-34) – 1,000 FR, 200 Fly; and Michele Choe (40-44) – 50 BK, 50 Fly.  Emily Ryczek (18-24) won the 200 FR, and Marie Restrepo (55-59) won the 50 FR.

INDIVIDUAL RECORDS AND AGE GROUP WINS – MEN

Doug Slater (60-64) won six individual events, with three VA/Zone meet records (100 BK, 1:00.29; 200 BK, 2:14.89; 100 IM, 1:00.09), one Zone meet record (50 BK, 28.02), and one VA record (100 FR, 54.14), in addition to his 50 Fly victory.  Lucas Bureau (18-24) broke the USMS national record in the 100 IM (49.23), rattled it in the 100 Fly (47.41), and also won the 100 FR (43.97) and 50 Fly (21.95) – all VA/Zone meet records.  Additionally, Lucas’s 800 FR Relay leadoff of 1:39.93 is a new VA/Zone meet record in the 200 FR.  Kevin Gallagher (30-34) won the 50 FR & 100 FR with VA/Zone meet records (20.65 / 45.67) and the 100 IM with a Zone meet record of 52.94.

Sidney Glass (25-29) won the 100 BK in a new VA record** of 52.24, later lowering it to 51.63 leading off the national record setting 400 Medley Relay. Sidney also won the 100 FR and 100 IM, and set a new VA record in the 50 BK with a 23.60 relay leadoff.  Carter Head (18-24) won the 1,000 FR, 200 BR and 400 IM; and Rich Williams (40-44) swept all three breaststrokes.

Alex Henderson (18-24) set a VA record in the 100 BK (52.17) in addition to winning the 50 BK.  Four other men also were double winners:  Chris Fay (25-29) – 50 FR, 50 BR; Dan Earle (45-49) – 500 FR, 1,000 FR; Evan Elsaesser (30-34) – 100 BK, 100 Fly; and Teddy Bulakul (30-34) 50 BK, 50 Fly.

John Rockwell (40-44) won the 200 IM, Michael Lovett (40-44) won the 50 FR, and last – but certainly not least – Andy Greenhalgh (18-24) set a new VA and Zone meet record in the 500 FR (4:29.09), in addition to carrying a huge load in the long relays.

There’s something slightly ridiculous about delivering that breathless summary and realizing that it still misses so much:  Kenzi Dickhudt’s big time drops, great Club Tribe debuts from Ellen Shell and Nathan Stamps, Adrian Maholchic and Brian Lukacsy giving us a big boost on Sunday, Julia Davidson’s relay MVP performance, Lindsay Lovett’s solid 50 BK swims, Michele Choe getting down to 27.01 in the 50 FR and splitting a 26.72, Kraig Gass laying out for the 800 FR R / 400 MR double – the list goes on!  There were also too many huge relay splits to recount here — a LEGAL 20.99 from Chris Fay, a 58.92 100 FR from Ellen Minzenmayer, Michael Lovett with a 23.68 50 fly, Krista Gass rolling out 25-lows, Carter Head with a 1:01.12 100 BR split, Evan Elsaesser’s 22.74 50 Fly split, Shaner hammering a couple big anchor legs (23.9 / 52.9) – and many, many more.

Congratulations on a phenomenal meet, everyone!  Goooooooo, CLUB TRIBE!!

** Correction:  post-publication, David Wren’s 2016 swim of 51.06 was added to the record board.
