2017 USMS SCY NATIONALS -- MEET RECAP

Club Tribe was represented by four swimmers at the 2017 USMS SCY National Championships last weekend in Riverside, CA: Katie Grier, Shannon Greene, Michael Lovett and Rich Williams. This little team of four packed a very big punch, as they finished 41st among the 172 local clubs that scored, surpassing larger local rivals like UMAC and VMST and even outscoring 7 of the regional conglomerate teams.

Katie, Shannon, Michael and Rich scored in both the 200 Free Relay (7th, 1:35.77) and 200 Medley Relay (8th, 1:45.80) in the incredibly tough 25+ age group, with Shannon anchoring the Medley Relay against NATHAN ADRIAN!

Katie had a tremendous meet, scoring 53 individual points in the W 35-39 division, including a national championship and Virginia record in the 100 Free (52.15). Katie established two more VA records with a 3rd place finish in the 50 Fly (26.00) and a 2nd place finish in the 200 Free (1:56.71).  She also finished on the podium in her other individual events: 100 Fly (2nd, 59.06); 50 Free (3rd, 24.06); and 50 BK (3rd, 28.37).  Wow. If you haven’t seen the video of Katie’s 100 Free championship, check it out on the “Club Tribe Alumni Masters Swimming” Facebook page, complete with priceless commentary from Coach Rich.

Shannon was — as ever — Club Tribe’s Ironwoman, racing 2,850 yards in the W 30-34 division over four sessions amid heavy Triathlon training. Shannon kicked off the meet with a 4th place finish in the 1,650 Free (19:13.40) and scored in three additional individual events:  200 Fly (2nd, 2:21.11); 500 Free (5th, 5:33.81); and 200 Free (9th, 2:05.34).  She also swam a strong 58.86 in the 100 Free and a Masters-best 1:04.92 in the 100 Fly.  Shannon’s 200 Fly race was something to behold, as she attacked the front end before running down the eventual winner, closing to within 0.07 in a display of major guts.

Michael scored in every one of his races, which was quite a feat in what turned out to be a M 35-39 West Coast bloodbath. He finished 9th in the 50 Fly (24.11), and 10th in the 100 IM (54.91) and 50 Free (22.51). Michael also had superb relay splits, with a 21.94 on the 200 Free Relay and a 23.35 Fly split on the Medley.

Finally, Rich put together three great sessions, with Masters-best times in four flat start races: 50 Free(r) (23.39); 50 BK (27.57, 7th); 50 Fly (25.38); and 200 BR (2:23.41). Rich also blasted a Masters-best BR split on the Medley Relay (27.37) and scored in the 100 BR (10th, 1:04.12) and 50 BR (7th, 28.78), with this last swim coming at the tail end of the final sun-drenched, baking-hot session.  It was pretty amazing to see the way that Rich designed a double-taper for himself and his swimmers, and then led the way in the pool with time drops through the very last day.

Congratulations to these intrepid four, who flew the Club Tribe banner and represented us so well at the biggest event in Masters Swimming!
