David Gregg III Meet - Susan’s Recap

Saturday, February 11, six women and six men from Club Tribe returned to the pool in Richmond where they achieved victory during last summer's Nationals.  Honestly, I had nostagic feelings stepping on the pool deck and remembering the atmosphere from last summer.

This meet was well run with an open hospitality room full of food, inlcuding full size Peanut M&M's and regular M&M's, for all of the swimmers and spectators.  It was hard to stay focused on the meet.  Everytime I saw Kraig Gass and Dana Adkins, they were pouring bags of M&M's down their pie holes!  It didn't seem to hinder their swimming performance one bit.  Dana swam 5 events, more than anyone else at the meet, so I think he needed the nourishment to sustain his energy.  I'm very surprised that Kraig didn't crash and burn from the sugar, but he ended up swimming season best times in all of his events.

The babies (Sam, Kyle M., Bonnie, Elizabeth and Matt) kicked ass as usual.  Watching them swim is both exciting and sorrowful.  Exciting in how easy they make it look and sorrowful in remebering what we once were. Matt swam in his first meet back since last summer and had solid swims.  Elizabeth's range from the 500 free to the 50 fly was quite impressive.  Bonnie and Sam's speed has not missed a beat and they look primed to swim very fast this spring.  Kyle hit his goal times and looked very smooth.

Jeff Taylor, 66, swam out of him mind in the 50 fly with a time of 29.98.  I was trying to look for him to bow down, but he bolted out of the building after his race.

Then there was Elizabeth Baskin.  She had not swam in a meet in over 40 years, and entered the 1650 free!!!  At 66 years old, she hit it out of the park with a time of 27:47.52, holding :50's and :51's the entire race.  Congratulations Elizabeth.

Suni Mackall, 60, keeps chipping away at her times as she continues to improve this first year of racing.

Krista and I spent hours solving the problems of the world and swam some solid races inbetween conversations.  Krista is becoming a breastroker, so watch out eveyone.

Look forward to seeing everyone next month at Katie's swim meet.
