Frequently Asked Questions

What is Club Tribe?

Club Tribe is a U.S. Masters swimming team in the Virginia LMSC, founded in 2014 by a few former William & Mary swimmers who just wanted to swim relays together at USMS meets.  We currently have more than 50 swimmers across several states, ranging from 23 to 69 years old.  We have a fantastic group that trains regularly at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA under the leadership of Michael Lovett (’00) (for practice info, e-mail Michael at mlovett@gmail.com).  Many of our team members train independently and/or with other teams or training groups, which allows us to welcome teammates from across the region and nation.  We have a wide range of ability and commitment levels, and we welcome swimmers of all ages who want to be part of a lively, fun, growing Masters team.  Approximately 60% of our team members have prior affiliations with William & Mary, but this is by no means a requirement to join — we have team members from more than 15 schools (ACC, Ivy League, SEC, Big Ten, CAA, etc. etc.).  We currently do not charge to join or participate.

Where and when does Club Tribe train? Is there coaching?

We have a fantastic group that trains regularly at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA under the leadership of Michael Lovett (’00).  In addition to weekday workouts, this group swims together most Saturdays — often followed by an extremely long brunch in or around Clarendon (for practice info, e-mail Michael at mlovett@gmail.com).  Many of our team members train independently and/or with other teams or training groups, which allows us to welcome teammates from across the region and nation.  The Arlington training group and several other Club Tribe swimmers receive virtual coaching from Rich Williams (’98), a former ASCA Level 5 coach who has had tremendous success helping busy adults swim fast with a low-yardage, low-time commitment system based on Ultra Short Race Pace Training (USRPT) methods pioneered by Dr. Brent S. Rushall.  Coach Rich offers incredibly thoughtful, specific coaching tailored to meet your personal goals.  In return, he asks only for good, clear two-way communication.  After you register for Club Tribe, we’ll put you in touch with Coach Rich if you are interested in receiving coaching.

Who can I contact to discuss Club Tribe?

Kyle Ahlgren (’97) manages the team and can be reached at ClubTribeAlumni@gmail.com or (202) 957-3936.

I swam at William & Mary, but I don’t know anyone on Club Tribe.  Can I still join?

Of course!  You are one of our most desired demographics right now – we very much want to expand into all age groups/class years.

I went to William & Mary, but I swam for the W&M sWiM Club, not the varsity team.  Can I still join?

Of course!  We currently have one sWiM Club alum, and we’re looking for more.  We want to become the go-to USMS team for you guys.

I swam in college, but I have no connections to William & Mary.  Can I still join?

Of course!  Club Tribe currently has alums from more than 15 schools (ACC, Ivy League, Big Ten, SEC, CAA etc. etc.).

I didn’t swim in college.  Can I still join?

Of course!  Our team members have a wide range of swimming backgrounds, including some who did not swim in college.

I’ve been out of the pool for a very long time and I have nightmares about swim meets.  Can I still join?

Of course!  Our team members have a wide range of ability and commitment levels.  We are extremely proud of our national records, national championships, Top-Ten national rankings, Virginia LMSC records, etc., but we also have cherished teammates who are in this just for fun.  A great thing about Club Tribe is that YOU get to decide every single thing about your approach, and you have teammates who will support you every step of the way.
